Winter Marathon 2011: Day Six

Figure painting. The words every novice artist dreads. The words which invoke harrowing images of distorted limbs, muddy values, and nice clothes laid to waste by permanent and decidedly poorly mixed paint. The words which humbly remind me that everything does NOT come easily to me artistically. That I have a tremendously long way to go.

Despite my literary rambling, I have to admit that I genuinely had fun. I had fun, even if the nicest thing anyone said to me all day is that they like my "aggressive painting style." I wish I was able to produce something a little more sophisticated in a three hour time span... but hey. I'll take what I can get.

Winter Marathon 2011: Day Five

I especially like the cavalry man with the robotic arm. Would have liked to upload the full 20 min drawing of the man in the beanie but its waaaaay too large and I didn't feel like scanning it into three or four pieces and assembling it. Yeah I drew so many naked cowboys today. That's not weird, right?

Winter Marathon 2011: Day Four

Amazing lecture and gesture class with Dave Pimentel today. High energy, fun, and education classroom setting + inspirational, laid back, and incredibly nice teacher = good times. Here are some really loose one and two minute gesture drawings:

Ps: I shook his hand! *fist pump*

Perspective Drawings Week 1

I have made a commitment with a group of friends to draw three perspective drawings a week, posted every Monday on the blog "Gridders Anonymous: Putting Things in Perspective." The punishment if I don't? Upload a video of myself doing the macarena OR dancing to the culturally dated "Who Let the Dogs Out?" by Baha Men. Kinda makes you want to be late on purpose huh?

Winter Marathon 2011: Day Two

The two words which describe day two are "frustration" and "confusion". "Fatigue" should probably also be on that list. I spent eight hours in a windowless room, filled with various theater props including a twelve foot chainlike fence complete with barbed wire (gotta love the prison ambiance), attempting to draw two of the most talented models I have had the privilege to work with. We had the opportunity to learn from Disney animator Mike Mattesi, author of "How to Draw FORCE," who challenged us to draw with quick, deliberate, forceful, and varied lines to create story, form, and texture. It was challenging.

Winter Marathon 2011: Day One

This week I have been attending a figure drawing marathon at SJSU from December 7th to December 14th. Day one, "warm up," consisted of reuniting with old friends, shaking off the rust, and knocking out some of the worst drawings of my life. After that initial shock, I managed to produce a few pieces that didn't make me want to projectile vomit. Here's the best of the worst (click thumbnails to see full size images):
