Tyrus Wong

A friend of mine recommended that I check out Tyrus Wong... and I did! Tyrus Wong has a really fascinating story. He was working in the film industry in the 1930's, an era when very few minorities were allowed such an opportunity. Disney made a bold move by hiring Tyrus to design backgrounds for the film Bambi. Although he was only credited as a background painter, Tyrus Wong designed the entire look of the film from the ground up. Until Tyrus was brought on, the studio was struggling to make their characters read against the dense detail of the forest. Tyrus brought simplicity to the forest while retaining its spirit.
